What is a widget and how to create one in OS X 10.4 image icon of post it note

Apple have a useful website on developing OS X Dashboard Widgets. I've recently upgraded to OS X 10.4.5 from 10.3.9 and I'm fascinated by the widgets in OS X that I'm planning to create one :)
